EIGHTH ANNUAL SAVOY HISTORY LECTURE & DINNER
“The Venus Fixers”
The Art of Italy and World War II
An Illustrated Lecture by
ILARIA DAGNINI BREY
The Grolier Club
47 East 69th Street, New York
Friday, October 15th - at 6 PM sharp
Reception will follow at the Club at 7 PM
Dinner will follow the Reception at the Club at 8 PM
Subject of the lecture will be: The Venus Fixers, the title of Dr. Dagnini Brey’s recently published book dealing with the survival of Italy’s artistic patrimony through the ordeal of World War II, a story seen from the perspective for both the Italia fine-arts authorities as well as the Allied officers who, through the terrible events of those years, were charged with essentially the same task: protecting the art of Italy from destruction and dispersion.
Mrs. Brey was born in Padova, receiving her degree in literature at the city’s university. She continued post-doctoral studies in England and, after entering the publishing field with Marsilio Editori of Venice, Mrs. Brey came to New York in 1990 to join Rizzoli International. A freelance journalist since 1992, she has been a regular contributor to, among others, Corriere della Sera and Elle. Several years ago, Mrs. Brey began researching the events of March 1944 that resulted in the tragic destruction of Padova’s Ovetari Chapel with its magnificent frescoes by Andrea Mantegna. This research was then continued and much expanded, eventually becoming The Venus Fixers, published by Farrar, Strauss and Giroux last year. Mrs. Brey lives in Manhattan with her husband, the well-known cellist Carter Brey, and two teen-age children.
The lecture will be held, starting at 6 PM, in the large and handsome ground-floor exhibition hall of the Grolier Club, 47 East 60th street, New York. A reception and seated dinner, also at the Club, will follow the lecture.
Founded in New York in 1884, the Grolier Club is a private association of men and women who share an interest in the arts of the book. It is named after the great Sixteen Century French bibliophile Jean Grolier. The Club maintains an important reference library comprising over 100,000 volumes; it also sponsors lectures, exhibitions and publications.
Further announcements will be circulated by e-mail and invitations will be mailed by August 1.
