Introductory Remarks by HRH Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia,
Grandson of His Late Majesty King Umberto II of Italy, who willed The Holy Shroud to The Vatican T H E O N L Y W I T N E S S: A H I S T O R Y O F T H E S H R O U D O F T U R I N Presentation by Guy R. Powell
The Backstory on the Shroud of Turin The Shroud of Turin, with its miraculous front and back image of a crucified man is believed by many to be the authentic burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Others believe it to be a medieval fake. Guy R. Powell, historian and Shroud researcher, has been studying the Shroud for the last 20 years. He is the author of The Only Witness: A History of the Shroud of Turin and will speak about the history of this enigmatic cloth spanning the last two millennia. The emphasis of this talk will be how the House of Savoy has been deeply intertwined with the cloth over the last 500 years. And it will highlight a full-scale replica of the actual Shroud and other artifacts. The Gospels tell of Jesus’s last days and this cloth incorporates each of the atrocities of His horrific death at the hands of the Roman Empire. But what happened next? Was it hidden from the Jewish hierarchy and the Romans to keep the cloth safe? How did it survive the calamitous Fourth Crusade in AD1204 and then make its way to France and finally into the possession of the House of Savoy? The House of Savoy had possession of the Shroud over 500 years until the death of former King Umberto II of Italy in 1983 when it was bequeathed to the Pope with the proviso that it remains in Turin, Italy. Come and make your own determination as to whether it is the authentic burial cloth of Jesus Christ or a simple medieval flogged up fake. Find out how the House of Savoy played a crucial role in the history of the Shroud over the last 500 years. Guy R. Powell
Mr. Powell became interested in the Shroud over 20 years ago and has been researching it ever since. He recently published a book on the history of the Shroud, The Only Witness: A History of the Shroud of Turin, taking a unique direction versus most Shroud authors, building a compelling and possible history of the Shroud over the last 2000 years through the use of historical fiction writing. When you read his book, you will be directly immersed in the story at the base of the cross. You’ll suffer the wounds of soldiers during the battle for Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. He has spoken to numerous groups on the Shroud and has been interviewed by a nationally acclaimed television personality. His interview series, the Backstory on the Shroud of Turin has allowed him to interview many of the top Shroud researchers around the world. |
